Stative Verbs .. 3 /

What are Stative Verbs?

Stative verbs are verbs that express a state rather than an action . These verbs are not normally used in progressive tense . These are kind of Stative Verbs :

Other verbs
Verbs of perception & opinions
Verbs of emotions
Verbs of sense
Be , have , own , belong , cost etc
Know , mean , think , understand , remember , forget , imagine , hope , believe . etc .
Like , dislike , love , hate , want , need , prefer , mind . etc .
Feel , hear , see , smell , taste , seem , notice ,  look , appear . etc .


The Verbs , see , hear , smell , taste and feel are commonly used with can to indicate an action happening now .
e.g.
I can hear a strange noise coming from the kitchen .


Non Stative Verbs ( dynamic verbs ): 4 /

"Dynamic" is an adjective which means something is moving or changing. 

In English grammar a "dynamic verb" means that the verb describes an action rather than a state. Dynamic verbs are sometimes known as "action verbs."


 Dynamic verbs:
These words can all be used in the progressive form .

Examples of dynamic verbs:
Eat , walk , learn , grow , sleep , talk , write , run , read , become , go .

Write a paragraph  about (Famous scientists) using the picture and the guide words.

Science (Scientists)
          Science helps us a lot. Scientists invent many useful things. They make our life easier. Scientists do experiments in the lab. Edison invented the cinema. He improved the light bulb. A.G Bell invented the telephone. Lee invented the WWW. Scientists are great people. I'd like to be a scientist.  Science is our way to the future.

Thomas Edison

          Edison was an amazing inventor. He invented a lot of machines. He invented the cinema. He invented the first machine for playing music. He improved the light bulb. His famous work was with electricity. He did many experiments. He improved the telephone. He explained his secret: “To invent, you need good imagination”.

Sindbad
          The stories of Sindbad the sailor have entertained generations of readers. We are not sure if they were fact or fiction. Sindbad was born in Baghdad. He is the hero of the Arabian Nights adventures. Sindbad crossed the sea on a whale and flew through the air on a huge bird. In 1981, the historian and explorer Tim Sever in  started a fantastic journey. He followed the voyage that was 
described in Sindbad's adventures.

Reading Comprehension

Read the following passage, then answer the questions below:


The dictionary is the most important tool for all language learners. It gives  

them the different meanings and spellings of words. Most dictionaries help to
pronounce words correctly by providing pronunciation and phonetic symbols.
Moreover, they show the learners how to use the words correctly by giving them
examples in meaningful sentences.
When you find a new word in a comprehension passage, it is not a good way     
to think directly of using the dictionary all the time to know its meaning. It is better for you to try first to understand the main idea of the passage and guess its meaning. Second, don't forget to look at the opposite of the word and try to remember it. If these two ways are not helpful, get the dictionary then and look it up.
     Some books have a mini-dictionary at their backs. The electronic dictionaries are the latest. They have more advantages than the printed ones because they are easy to download and carry, you can take them with you everywhere and listen clearly to the correct way of pronouncing words.
