Subject + verb 2 + object .                         Form        


Examples :
1- e.g. I visited Jeddah last week.
2-e.g. First I got up, then I had breakfast.
3-e.g.They were playing cards when the telephone rang.

Usage :
action finished in the past .  1-
2- series of completed actions in the past .
3- together with the Past Progressive/Continuous    
Time Expression ( signal words ) :                 1- yesterday, 2- last week,  3- ago, 4- in 2002 .

Subject + verb be ( was / were ) + verb +ing

Examples :
1- What were you doing at 9 o’clock last night ?
I was having dinner .
2- While John was cooking, Leo was sleeping .

3- My grandfather was writing a book in those days .
Usage :
1- To describe an action in progress at a certain time in the past .
2- To describe actions that were happening at the same time in the past . ( use while or as )
3- To describe temporary past state or action .
4- To describe background scene to a story .
