PAST SIMPLE AND PAST PROGRESSIVE 





Past simple

A / USE :


3/ together with the Past Progressive/Continuous .
2/ series of completed actions in the past
action finished in the past  1/
e.g.They were playing cards when the telephone rang.
e.g. First I got up, then I had breakfast
e.g. I visited Jeddah last week.

B / Signal words : ( time expression )
 1- yesterday, 2- last week,  3- ago, 4- in 2002 .
2- As soon As / when .

E/ Form :
- with regular verbs: infinitive + -ed
- with irregular verbs: 2nd column of the table of the irregular verbs

F / There are two kinds of sentences :
1-Affirmative sentences:
Regular verbs
Irregular verbs
played football.
went to the cinema.
We visited Alaska last year.
We were in Rome yesterday.
2-Negative sentences:
You must not negate a full verb in English. Always use the auxiliary did (Simple Past of to do) for negations.

Past progressive

Past Progressive2 -

Form   

Subject + verb be ( was / were ) + verb +ing
Examples :
?- What were you doing at 9 o’clock last night  1/
I was having dinner .
- While John was cooking, Leo was sleeping 2-

My grandfather was writing a book in those days 3-
Usage :
1-To describe an action in progress at a certain time in the past .
2-To describe actions that were happening at the same time in the past . ( use while or as )
To describe temporary past state or action 3-
To describe background scene to a story 4-
