Subject + verb 2 + object .                         Form
	Examples : 1- e.g. I visited Jeddah last week. 2-e.g. First I got up, then I had breakfast. 3-e.g.They were playing cards when the telephone rang.		Usage : action finished in the past .  1- 2- series of completed actions in the past . 3- together with the Past Progressive/Continuous
Time Expression ( signal words ) :                 1- yesterday, 2- last week,  3- ago, 4- in 2002 .
	2 / Verb to do , Did ( I , He , She , It  , They , We , You )	Kind of verbs : 1 / Verb to be ,  Was ( I , He , She , It ) Were ( They , We , You )
	Irregular verbs : ( Affirmative ) We visited Alaska last year . We were in Rome yesterday .	( : ( AffirmativeRegular verbs I played football . We visited Alaska last year .
	Irregular verbs :   ( Negative )  I wasn’t  in  Alaska last year . We weren’t  in Rome yesterday .	Regular verbs :  ( Negative ) I didn't  play football . We didn't visit Alaska last year .
	B /  WH Q  : Where did you play football ? When did you play football ? Why Where did you play football ? who & what ……	Questions :    A /   YES & NO Q  : Use the auxiliary did (Simple Past of to do). Did you play football?  Did he play football?

Form    Subject + verb be ( was / were ) + verb +ing
Examples : 1- What were you doing at 9 o’clock last night ? I was having dinner . 2- While John was cooking, Leo was sleeping . 3- My grandfather was writing a book in those days .	Usage : 1- To describe an action in progress at a certain time in the past . 2- To describe actions that were happening at the same time in the past . ( use while or as ) 3- To describe temporary past state or action . 4- To describe background scene to a story .

Past simple :  

  Form :   S + V2 + O

Stayed	stay

EXAMPLE	USAGE
e.g. I visited Jeddah last week.	1) action finished in the past
e.g. First I got up, then I had breakfast	2) series of completed actions in the past
e.g. They were playing cards when the telephone rang	3) together with the Past Progressive  /Continuous .

There are 2 kinds of verbs in the past :

 1 - with regular verbs: infinitive + -ed
 2 - with irregular verbs: 2nd column of the table of the irregular verbs .

There are two kinds of sentences :

1-Affirmative sentences:

Regular verbs	Irregular verbs
I played football.	I went to the cinema.
We visited Alaska last year.	We were in Rome yesterday.

2-Negative sentences  :           Add not after  Did to make sentence negative .

I		played	football.
I	didn't	play	football.
He	didn't	play	football.

 Questions:

YES & NO Q :	WH Q :
Use the auxiliary did (Simple Past of to do). Did you play football? Did he play football?	Where did you play football ? When did you play football ? Why did you play football ?

Signal words : ( time expression ) :           1- yesterday, 2- last week,  3- ago, 4- in 2002 .
